Top 10 Facts about Furniture

Top 10 Facts about Furniture

Furniture can be found anywhere and everywhere. From the bedroom to kitchen to dining room. We are surrounded by furniture everywhere whether be it in our office or our home. Whenever we are feeling sleepy, we slip into our bed to take a wonderful sleep, when we watch television in our living rooms we make use of our comfortable sofas, when we want to read some books or magazines we sit on our relaxing rocking chairs. Just like every other aspect of life, furniture has a rich history, too. In short, all these furniture items were created to serve a purpose by those who felt a need. Here are the Top 10 Facts about Furniture.

  1. Did You Know apart from a house and a car, furniture is the third most expensive thing people buy in their entire lives.

  2. Sofas have been in use around the globe in one form or another. They date back to the ancient times of Egyptians and Arabs. The first Chesterfield sofa which is an icon of British gentleman’s clubs was designed in the 1700s. Nowadays, we have sofa beds, chaise sofas, loveseats and corner sofa beds. Did you know a sofa normally stays in a usable condition for about 8-9 years?

  3. Beds were also found in ancient times. They were in use even before 3600 B.C. However, those beds were not like the beds of today as they were made of natural items. Those beds were made with the help of straws, leaves (of palms), or skins (of bears and tigers). It was the 12th century when the first wooden bed was made. Did you know we spend almost 33% of our lives in bed?

  4. The today’s word ‘chair’ has been derived from the Latin word ‘cathedra’ meaning ‘sit’ and ‘down’. Conventionally, chairs were used by the superior members of society like kings and nobles. The oldest chairs were used by the Egyptians and that was almost 5000 years ago. Chairs were not common until the 16th century. While rich people sat on chairs, poor ones used benches and stools. The most expensive chair sold at $28 million, belonged to Yves Saint Laurent, a French Designer.
  5. The word ‘table’ has been derived from a Latin word ‘tabula’ meaning ‘plank’ or ‘flat piece of wood’. The tables of ancient times were quite different in purpose than the tables of today. Egyptians used tables for playing games and putting stuff. Chinese used wooden tables for creating artwork and Greeks were the first people to use a table as a dining place.

  6. One of the oldest bookshelves in the world is placed at the Bodleian Library at Oxford University. The university also has a claim of having one of the oldest libraries in the entire Europe.

  7. We owe the invention of basic office chairs to the naturalist, biologist and geologist, Charles Darwin in the 1800. Nowadays, no offices are without the chairs that have no wheels. These chairs provide easier access to any nearby desk or cupboard.

  8. In the 17th century, the first desks were introduced to the world, which was known as ‘bureaus’. They looked like a solid oak desk, only with an additional feature of the tabletop being opened. Due to this feature, these desks were also called sloping front desks. Once the UK was struck by the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century, newer and modified forms of desks started emerging.

  9. Office chairs and armchairs did not always have arms. In the office, it wasn’t recommended to have chairs with armrests. Why? Because it got in the way of getting closer to the desk. However, adjustable armrests are now being seen in the workplaces.

  10. An interest in vintage furnishings, particularly in younger buyers over newly manufactured items. Likely contributors to people wanting vintage pieces are a desire to be eco-friendly by reusing products and a lack of disposable income.

When is the Best Time to Buy Furniture?

When is the Best Time to Buy Furniture?

Furniture discounts vary from season to season, so when is the best time to buy furniture? Regardless of what your reason may be for wanting new furniture, be strategic about when you purchase new items to revamp your home without breaking the bank. So, when is the best time to buy furniture?

While January is also a great month to buy furniture (post-Christmas sales, new styles are released in February), July wins out over January because:

  • Bringing your furniture home in snowy weather conditions is difficult.
  • Overall furniture sales are down in the summer making the discounts go up.
  • New furniture styles are also released in August, so great deals on last chance sales.
  • You can enjoy your new outdoor furniture right away.

BUT YOU CAN STILL FIND DEALS ALL YEAR LONG

Spring Savings

Springtime is when home sales are on the upswing, which means eager furniture retailers want to help people furnish their homes quickly by offering deals and discounts on indoor furniture. Never buy outdoor furniture in spring because patio sets, barbecues and poolside furniture are all in very high demand. Higher consumer demand, comes higher prices.

Summertime Sales

Once summer rolls around, furniture sales seem to slump, especially in July (if it weren’t for discounts bringing in customers, retailers would be in trouble). Use this slump in sales to your advantage and buy indoor furniture at heavily discounted prices in July before retailers release dozens of new items in August. Although August is a big month for new furniture sets and it is also a great month to buy outdoor furniture too but

January Sales

Wintertime isn’t fun for furniture shopping. Before Christmas, people are simply too busy buying gifts and gadgets for their loved ones to be concerned with upgrading their beds, ottomans or recliners. As previously mentioned, January is still a decent bet for favourable furniture prices. If you have money leftover from the holiday shopping season and want to buy a new mattress or indoor furniture, then definitely look into buying furniture in January.

Back to School Sales

Looking for a new swivel chair, desk or other office furniture? Autumn is the best time to invest in new office furniture, as retailers compete for students’ parents’ money. Buying spring or summer-related furniture such as patio chairs or grills is also a smart move during the autumn months. Retailers want to completely clear their shelves of outdoorsy items that don’t stand much of a chance of selling until the weather warms up next spring.

Local Deals

Local furniture stores don’t always follow market trends. Sometimes, they’ll have a sale simply for the sake of boosting their sales numbers for the month, giving you great deals on everything from coffee tables to bed sets.

Patience is the key when trying to save on your next furniture purchase. If you can wait, you can find great deals all year long. But still, try to buy in July.

Top 7 Tips When Buying Furniture

Top 7 Tips When Buying Furniture

Good furniture is designed to incorporate elements that are both useful and stylish while being durable enough to withstand daily use over many years.

Whether you’re on the hunt for the best sofa or need a nightstand for your bedroom, you are sure to find pieces that match your decor. You likely spend thousands of pounds over the years on furniture, so be careful and make good and sensible choices. Here are the Top 7 Tips When Buying Furniture.

  1. Before purchasing that new couch, consider how it’ll fit in with the rest of your furniture and whether it matches your lifestyle. If you have a house, that’s probably your most valuable possession with a car following closely behind. After that, you’ve probably spent the most of your budget on your furniture.

  2. You can never measure enough. It isn’t enough to measure the furniture to see if it’ll fit where you want it, though that’s a good start. If it’s an oversized or unusually shaped piece, you’ll want to examine the doorway, and perhaps multiple doorways especially if you live in an apartment. A lot of people have dealt with a piece of furniture not fitting in an elevator. Height, width and depth of the furniture piece are important to note when checking to see if it will fit in your elevator. Many people forget to measure furniture, which can cost you a ridiculous amount of money and time if you have to return a piece to the store.

  3. Remember that more costs could be coming, like a delivery charge or the store will offer you the chance to pay for an extended warranty. Either scenario could mean you’re spending more than you intended. Knowing that you spent far more than you planned could really make your head hurt especially if your oversized sofa jams your doorway.

  4. Think about the maintenance of your furniture. Some high-end pieces of furniture may require more care than you would suspect. So do your research! If there’s wood involved for example buying a table, ask about the wood finish’s durability, Know how it can be cleaned and with what products and most importantly, what not to clean it with. A lot of the time, some cleaning products ruin wood finishes.

  5. Think about how the furniture will look with the rest of your furniture in your home. No matter how well you think you know your home, it can sometimes be hard to be in a store and visualise how an item will work in a room. As in-store  for a colour swatch and bringing it home to see how the colour looks in your own home surrounded by your own furniture is a great idea especially if you are going to invest in an expensive furniture eg sofa, dining table etc.

  6. You also need to be thinking about how your furniture will fit your lifestyle, not only now but in the foreseeable future. It’s easier said than done. For example, you may be single now but what happens if you get married and have children. You may want the furniture to be strong and last longer especially with kids about.

    7. Don’t rush it. Take your time. People typically spend months looking for a house and weeks searching for the right car. Don’t spend minutes buying furniture. The best advice is to walk away for at least a day and then decide if you still want it before you buy it.

Things to Think about Regarding your Furniture in Your Room Space

Furniture varies greatly from room to room, yet its basic function remains the same. Furniture should provide complete comfort, utility and style to your living space whether it is your living room, bedroom or home office.

Living/Family Room

Decide how much seating you need and coordinate the space with enough chairs, recliners, rocking chairs and couches.

  • In case of smaller rooms in a flat for example to free up space, look for an L-shaped couch that will fit into a corner.
  • Sectional couches are designed for larger rooms and some feature built-in cup holders or tables for added convenience.

Consider the style and material of the furniture that you are looking for. Leather provides sophistication and durability, while chenille and velvet provide soft cushioning and elegance

  • Ottomans can add comfort and enhance the appearance of the room, and some models add extra storage
  • Reclining chairs provide an ultra-comfortable way to relax in front of the TV
  • Choose a comfortable arm height that’s neither too high nor too low
  • Select couches and chairs with simple lines to give your home a modern look and feel
  • Special theatre-style seating can turn a family room into a movie theatre.

Bedroom

Dressers, chests and armoires provide storage while serving as an element of style. Choose a set that provides enough space while enhancing the room’s appearance. Evaluate the size of your room and the amount of space you need to sleep to determine the best size.

  • Traditional mattresses and box springs come in twin, full, queen and king sizes
  • Memory foam mattresses contour to your body for added comfort, while adjustable beds allow you to customize positions for your head and feet
  • California king-size beds are slightly longer and narrower than conventional-size kings
  • Airbeds, futons, bunk beds and loft beds provide space-saving sleep alternatives
  • Ensure waterbeds are made from high-quality materials to avoid leaks
  • Nightstands frame a bed while providing handy storage and surface space
  • Add mirrors to smaller rooms to create a sense of depth and openness.

Dining Room/Kitchen

Size is the most important element to consider when placing furniture in your kitchen or dining room. Ensure there is enough room to comfortably sit at a table without crowding. Try to allow 24-30 inches of space for each person. Also, make sure there is room for people to slide chairs in and out.

  • Round tables work better in smaller dining rooms and kitchen as they maximize the amount of useable space
  • Rectangular tables are best for larger rooms
  • Look for chairs that fit well when positioned with the back support of the chair resting up against the table
  • Tables that are too small make rooms seem large and less intimate
  • Tables that are too large make dining rooms feel crowded
  • A table with an extension can grow to accommodate more guests.

Home Office

A comfortable chair and a desk with plenty of storage space are the key to making a useful home office. If you spend a lot of time on the computer emailing or working on spreadsheets, make sure you have a chair that provides enough support to keep you feeling comfortable over long periods of time.

  • Choose a chair that allows you to make multiple adjustments, especially if more than one person uses it
  • Cloth and mesh materials provide ventilation to keep your chair cool, while leather and vinyl offers a stylish look that is easy to clean
  • Height, armrest and tilt adjustment allow customization for long-term, comfortable use
  • Chairs with five-point bases provide stability, while casters provide improved mobility
  • A good desk should provide plenty of space for your computer, speakers and keyboard.
  • If you use your desk for more than computer work, look for a larger surface with extra drawers. In small rooms, consider desks that provide vertical storage or include spaces for other accessories, such as a printer
  • L-shaped desks can be placed in a corner for better use of space in small areas.

Good Luck!
